The Danish Nature Indicator (DNI) was developed in 2021 to guide conservation planning and evaluate restoration actions in Denmark by providing an integrated assessment of conservation value. The framework combines biotic integrity, ecological integrity, and legal protection into a single framework, to identify and promote protected, self-sustaining ecosystems. A central assumption in the DNI framework is that ecological integrity (defined through key ecological processes and abiotic conditions) enhances the potential for high biotic integrity by diversifying ecosystems through the maintenance of natural disturbances that shape habitats and facilitate species co-existence. The DNI models four fundamental, but often highly human-modified, ecological processes (sand drift, flooding from the sea, hydrology, and grazing) at a high spatial resolution (10x10 m). This enables a fine-scale evaluation of whether ecological integrity is reflected in observed biological communities. To test this, we calculate plot‑level community completeness (derived from estimations of dark diversity) using plant observations from the NOVANA monitoring program and compare these patterns to the DNI‑derived ecological integrity metrics.
