Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection kills more people than HIV/AIDS or malaria, but has received far less attention. Antiviral treatment for HBV effectively prevents its long-term complications, but still, less than 1% of those living with HBV receive treatment due to complex treatment guidelines, poor access to diagnostic tools, and lack of political commitment.

Dr. Johannessen's group started a pilot treatment program for hepatitis B in Ethiopia in 2015, aiming to develop a simple and locally validated treatment guideline. This session will give insight into his work in Ethiopia and current and future challenges in managing HBV infection in Sub-Saharan Africa.
