TLHE project 2025: Jesper Eriksen, Department of Economics
ABSTRACT
Designing effective
university programs requires understanding students’ diverse backgrounds,
motivations, and preferences. As part of the upcoming Danish Master Reform,
universities must introduce new work-integrated master’s programmes by 2028, in
which students combine part-time employment with academic study. This project
will examine how social science students at the University of Copenhagen
evaluate such study-work programmes and which programme features, such as
flexibility, curricular emphasis, and income during studies, influence their
willingness to enrol. Using a vignette-based survey experiment, we will elicit
students’ beliefs about the academic and labour-market value of work-integrated
study and assess how their program interest responds to changes in the program
design. The project contributes to research on how students select educational
pathways based on perceived program characteristics and value and what supports
or hinders their engagement. The findings will be relevant for the implementation
of the Master Reform, providing data-driven guidance for designing programs
that align with students’ needs and interests.
