Generative AI development provides challenges and opportunities for higher education. We let film- and media studies and rhetoric students experiment with ChatGPT as a tool for generating feedback on assignments. Students found the experience exciting, but somewhat frustrating. They reported skepticism about the tool, noting that it required skills for generating useful results and that its politeness could hamper the quality feedback. Students found it could be a beneficial complement to human feedback, for specific purposes and parts of the writing process. ChatGPT can be particularly useful if students take into account genre-specific rules of academic writing and ask the right questions.
