Healthcare disparities in low and middle-income countries are often the result of inadequacies in the health system, including human resources. Mental healthcare heavily relies on the availability of mental health professionals. However, many LMICs lack the critical number of specialist mental health professionals needed for the scale-up of mental health services. Global mental health efforts need to prioritize the improvement of human resources for mental health. Building capacity through collaboration can lead to sustainable improvements in human resources, which could have a positive impact on the mental health system of countries. In this talk, collaborative training programs in Ethiopia and their progress over two decades will be reviewed. Furthermore, the need for such programs to be adaptive to unprecedented regional and global situations will be highlighted.
